About Course

The Talmud is far more than a collection of laws. It is also a treasury of stories — dramatic, funny, strange, wise, and deeply human.

This four-part series introduces some of the most colorful characters and unforgettable tales in rabbinic literature. Through these stories, we encounter the personalities, tensions, humor, and moral questions that shaped Jewish tradition.

Sessions include:

  • The Rabbi Goes Rogue: Yohanan ben Zakkai Leaves Town in a Coffin. A daring escape changes the future of Judaism.
  • The Rainmaker Takes a Very Long Nap. What happens when a man sleeps through generations?
  • Hillel and Shammai Duke It Out. Two great rabbis clash over how Judaism should be lived.
  • An Oven Makes Trouble for the Rabbis. One of the Talmud’s most famous arguments asks: Who gets to decide religious truth?
